The black SUV was a rental. After he showed them his credentials, the rental company had willingly given the name of the driver to Andy. Carl Duncan. Andy knew him. Duncan had been Joseph Wolf’s right-hand man for years, but he had slipped up when he used his real name to rent the car.

He had given a local address too. Local law enforcement had verified that it belonged to a nice motel on the other side of town. Armed with this information, Andy guessed who had taken Liesel.

“You’ve got to help me,” he pleaded with the town sheriff, a man who looked around eighty. “She’s scared to death of her ex-husband, and she may have reason to be.”

“You said she got into the car of her own free will.”

“You know that means nothing,” Andy scoffed.

The sheriff cleared his throat, refusing to meet Andy’s eyes. “I’ll level with you, Marshal Bryce. This is a sleepy little town with only five people on the payroll. We don’t have the manpower to deal with a heavy hitter like William Wolf. If he’s only passing through, it suits me fine. Nobody wants his kind around here. I don’t want him getting ticked off at me and taking it out on my family either.”

Andy slammed his hand down on the sheriff’s desk, the sound reverberating around the office and causing several deputies to peek into the room. “What kind of attitude is that?” he growled. “Don’t you care that a woman’s life might be at stake?”

The old sheriff sighed. “What do you want me to do?”

“I want some officers to go with me to that motel. I want to talk to Mrs. Wolf to make sure she’s with her husband because she wants to be and not because he’s making her.”

The old man pursed his lips. “If that’s all you want, you can go by yourself. A man like Wolf isn’t fool enough to argue with your badge.”

Andy gave up. “I’ve seen some cowardly things before, Sheriff, but you take the prize. Okay, fine. I’ll go alone if I have to. If I get killed I hope your conscience never gives you another minute’s peace.”
